My Personal Experiences at a Rehabilitation Hospital
I first met Eve in 2002 when I was working at a well-known rehabilitation hospital. She had suffered two strokes and required full rehabilitation. Eve presented with very unusual and rare symptoms as a combination of the two strokes. She reads and writes in mirror writing and is unable to count. She no longer has a concept of quantity. Despite her very unusual symptoms, her experiences of rehabilitation are similar to those of any other inidividual. She kindly wrote down her story (in mirror writing) and agreed to share it with the public. I have simply typed her stories out for everyone to enjoy and share!
Eve's First Story:
In the past when I heard the word 'rehab' "Rehabilitation", I immediately thought it meant "drugs or alcohol or mental" people. It was or is, associated with the rich and famous of the world. When I opened a magazine or newspaper these people were always in the news. Blaming their downfall on either a love affair going sour, or on depression or even on plain boredom. This is not applicable on the mental patients.
Well, I am in "Rehab" at present! It's not for any of the above reasons. My reason is a simple one. I had strokes! Which have left me paritally lame on the left side, with a shaky right hand, stuttering and cannot count and parital memory loss. That's enough to start drugs and alcohol!!! But since I have found that I can once again write even if it's in mirror image, I am so happy!! I have something to read without turning it upside down or with the aid of a mirror.
Here at my "Rehabilitation" hospital we have many patients who suffer from various injuries. Motor car accidents, motorbike accidents, which casue many types of injuries. Some of the injuries are: spinal, strokes, amputation and many more.
We have the kindest and most wonderful therapists. They are firstly, caring, dedicated and they give their undivided attention to each and everyone one of their patients. They actually sit and listen and give us encouragement all the time, even if it's the smallest achievement.
